Your cumulative GPA represents the combined average of all grades earned throughout your entire academic history at an institution. Unlike a semester GPA, which only measures performance in a single term, the cumulative GPA compounded calculations summarize your overall academic career. This is the single figure listed on official transcripts, checked by employers, and reviewed by university admissions boards.
One common mathematical mistake students make is trying to calculate their cumulative GPA by averaging their semester GPAs together (e.g., adding semester 1's 3.0 and semester 2's 4.0 and dividing by 2 to get 3.50). This is only correct if you attempted the exact same number of credits in both terms. If you took 12 credits in semester 1 and 18 credits in semester 2, the second semester must carry more weight. How can I raise my cumulative GPA?
Raising your cumulative GPA becomes harder over time because the total number of credits increases. To raise it, you need to score grades higher than your current average. Retaking classes where you earned a D or F can also result in a rapid boost, as many colleges allow you to replace the old grade with the new grade in your GPA calculations.
Do transfer credits affect my cumulative GPA?
Usually, no. In most colleges and universities, transfer credits are accepted for course requirements, but the numerical grades do not carry over to your new school's transcript. Your cumulative GPA at your new institution starts fresh, reflecting only the classes completed there.
Why can't I just average my semester GPAs together?
Simple averages fail because they treat semesters of different sizes equally.
